Kicking off the 2011 AiR program on February 10, Mewshop welcomes Bobbie O'Steen, Emmy-nominated film editor and critically acclaimed author. Following her extensive work in the cutting room, Bobbie wrote Cut to the Chase, based on interviews with her late husband and colleague, legendary film editor Sam O'Steen. This fascinating book takes the reader behind the scenes of some of the most influential movies in motion picture history, including "The Graduate" and "Chinatown."

'Basterds' Editor Sally Menke Talks Dire

      August 14, 2010, 12:05 pm
Last week Quentin Tarantino hosted a below-the-line panel in Los Angeles for the Oscar-nominated members of his Inglourious Basterds crew, including director of photography Robert Richardson, visual effects designer John Dykstra and editor Sally Menke. Following the panel, Cinematical was lucky enough to catch up with Menke via telephone to ask a few additional questions. In addition to discussing the process of putting together Basterds, Menke mused about the necessity for film language in...

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 "saves" an interv

      August 13, 2010, 7:48 pm
One of the reasons my direct posting here has been light lately is that we’ve been working on a small documentary, partly for the exercise but mostly to a) have demo material for prEdit that isn’t 10 years old and b) prove to myself the prEdit is indeed a great new workflow for documentary editing. Plus a documentary gets made to store the memories of the early 60’s drag racing community.

      August 12, 2010, 5:22 pm
The final segment of my interview with engineer, inventor and entrepreneur, Bill Warner, the man who created Avid Technology. In this segment Bill talks about getting the initial investment, the period leading up to the launch of the company and how an encounter with some Apple employees at the SIGGRAPH show helped him and his team make a last minute decision to move development of the Media Composer to the Macintosh.

      The Reality of Cutting Reality

      August 12, 2010, 12:34 am
I connected with Adam Coleite after putting out a call for reality editors to interview on Facebook. We met up at a restaurant of his choice – a Corner Bakery in Burbank. A genial 30-something, he gave me a rundown on the logistics and challenges of editing reality (love the double entendre) as well as some insightful comments on audience perceptions of the genre and his own take on it.

Collaboration and Why The Auteur Theory Is Bull

Directors, listen to me hear — it’s impossible to make a film by yourself. Not every idea you’re going to have is good, and not all good ideas are going to come from you. The best comments I’ve gotten from directors are when they turn to me after viewing my Editor’s Cut and say "Wow, there were some things in there that I never would have thought of myself. Thanks." Of course, that doesn’t mean that we’re going to use those ideas...
