Top 5 Edited Films Centred Around Civil Uprising

    February 23, 2011, 1:56 pm
With all that’s happening in the Middle East and North Africa, I thought it would be timely to do a topic on civil revolutions, uprisings, and protests. This is kind of a tough one because the context for an uprising could be a number of things, so I did my best to pick the suggestions given to me that seemed to suit current events.

    5. Hotel Rwanda (2004)

Here is a film that always makes me cry, no matter what I’m feeling that day. The editing is subtle and classically structured. That said, it is obvious that the editing mirrors the main character’s struggle to keep face throughout— when a crisis arises he tries to keep it together, but the events he witnesses are so horrific that his humanity surfaces and crumbles. The editing reflects that by using his frustration and fragmenting the scene with cuts.
    4. Battleship Potemkin (1925)

I feel compelled to put this on the list because it’s the film that inspired me to pursue editing in film school. My production teacher put on a documentary that outlined the cuts, shapes, movement, and pace of the famous staircase scene in the way that Eisenstein himself explains all of his theories in Film Form and Film Sense (all you noob editors out there better read those...). I also put it up because it genuinely is edited well... there’s a reason why it is used to each editing!
    3. Black Hawk Down (2001)

Here’s a film from the perspective of an intervention force. While it’s depicting something slightly different than a straightforward uprising, these soldiers get thrust into the middle of one and become a part of it whether they realise it or not. The editing is smooth, the pacing is great, and with shots as beautiful as these it’s hard to have a bad montage.
    2. Battle in Seattle (2007)

At first I didn’t really know what to think of this film, but by the time it was over I felt like I had just gotten out of being there. While many films have this as their aim, it still comes off feeling like a movie. This has its "movie moments" for sure, but most of it puts you right there in the action, and is sometimes hard to watch. These moments are made possible by great editing, takes, and montage.
    1. Battle of Algiers (1966)

Here you go, you don’t get more relevant than this film. It’s also hard to compete with the editing in it. Because of the way in which it was edited, there are times when it feels like more of a documentary than a drama. The only difference is the use of pacing to provoke tension. Right off the top we’re put into action— people who are hiding are about to be found. It’s downright scary to watch.

As an interesting note, it was conveniently blocked by FOX just as the internet is on blackout strike today in solidarity against SOPA. American friends, please be aware that if SOPA passes, videos like this where I attempt to teach about film editing in a fun way will not be available anymore, even if I am in compliance with the Fair Use clause— in fact, I could be shut down, fined, and/or jailed without due process. If you like the internet and the ability to find information freely and easily, please educate yourself about this bill, and do whatever you can to stop it from passing!

Metropolis is one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, and it's obvious that the editing has a lot to do with it. The expressive nature of the acting is superbly juxtaposed with epically framed shots in such a way that story isn't only easy to follow, but really fun to watch!
