      August 17, 2010, 9:44 am
BURLINGTON, MA, Aug 16, 2010 — Avid(R) today announced that it has been honored by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences with an Engineering Plaque for Avid Media Access (AMA) for its role in dramatically improving the process of working with tapeless media – by eliminating time-consuming transcoding processes and saving time and money in the production process.

      Cutting Reality Part 2

      August 16, 2010, 3:48 pm
Going into the interview with Adam I was aware that editors of reality shows often are under the gun to plow through tons of crap, er, footage, to pluck out the proverbial pony. Over the course of lunch he opened my eyes to a couple of aspects that I hadn’t thought of.

      AVID'S NEW ISIS

      August 16, 2010, 3:15 pm
As this issue was going to press, Avid announced that it is expanding its ISIS shared storage product family with the introduction of the ISIS 5000. The company introduced the flagship Unity ISIS back in November of 2005, and James Frantzreb, Avid’s senior marketing segment manager for broadcast and storage, says the ISIS file system has since "been proven in the most demanding and high-profile media production environments in the world."

      SURVIVING AND THRIVING

      August 16, 2010, 3:15 pm
We often talk about how the economy has affected post businesses. And while many studios have closed their doors and sold off their gear, others have planned and plotted and operated in really smart ways, allowing them to actually expand their existing business. In our "Studios" feature on page 24, you will read about some success stories — studios with enough work or potential work that they are able to add rooms, gear and talent, or branch out to other cities. Some pros have taken the leap...

      CLOUD COMPUTING for Editors

      August 16, 2010, 3:14 pm
Generally speaking, cloud computing is Internet-based computing, where shared resources, software, and information are provided to computers and other devices on-demand, similar to how the electricity grid provides electricity. In today’s market, people are struggling to define what cloud computing means and how it could change our lives. Cloud computing presents new opportunities for working remotely. In the near future, cloud computing may make it possible for a workstation to only include...

The Terence and Philip Show - Episode 4

      August 16, 2010, 10:44 am
This week Terence and Philip start in on format wars and how we deal with them, particularly acquisition formats vs editing and delivery formats. Is native better? Terry tells us about Super LoiLoScope, which apparently can play anything. Discussion moves to the advantages of "new code" and the role of Randy Ubilos at Apple. Then on to the relative merits of ProRes and DNxHD codecs, including "offline" quality. Plus working from multiple sources.

Bill Warner, Walter Murch multi-part stories

      August 15, 2010, 10:57 am
There’s a couple of really good multi-part interviews that have been airing incrementally around the Internet that I wanted to point to. If you haven’t been following them then you’re in for a real treat as you catch up. Hollywood Reinvented is currently in part 5 of an interview with Bill Warner, the man who created Avid. Flickering Myth is taking an extended look at the career of Walter Murch.

The Editor's Guild (Pt 2 The Double-Edged Swo

      August 14, 2010, 7:58 pm
Are you curious about the union? This blog is a continuation of my previous entry on how you get into the Motion Picture Editors Guild. I thought it would be a good idea to provide a little insight into getting into the union. What I didn’t realize is that it would devolve into an entire diatribe about the state of the Editors Guild in the larger Hollywood perspective. So I packed my first entry with information, and saved the rant for here.

Editor Sally Menke Talks Tarantino, Cannes Cuts

      August 14, 2010, 12:06 pm
There’s one woman in the world who understands Quentin Tarantino better than anybody, and that’s Sally Menke. Since her work on Reservoir Dogs, Menke has cut every single one of Tarantino’s films, and for the last decade, she’s eschewed almost all other jobs to devote herself solely to the genre-blending auteur. This Sunday, Menke will be receiving the Lifetime Achievement honor at the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards, and as Inglourious Basterds begins its transformation from unexpected...
