With YouTube now hosting more searches per day than any site save Google (GOOG), the need for film and video editors is clear. The California Labor Dept. expects the field to grow in 2011, as agencies, media firms, corporations, and institutions look to spread their messages via video—so don't limit your search to one sector. This field requires specialized training, of course. It makes a great choice for creative types who want to expand their horizons or for photographers and filmmakers...

Walter Murch and The Rule of Six – Go Into The S

      December 5, 2016, 5:35 pm
Over the years, I have blogged several times about Walter Murch (see links below) whose work as a sound designer and film editor is notable in such movies as Julia, Apocalypse Now, Ghost, The English Patient, and The Talented Mr. Ripley. In my view, Murch has written one of the best screenwriting books — “The Blink of an Eye” — only it’s not about screenwriting, but rather film editing. However since screenwriting is so much about scene construction, perspective, and transitions between scenes, I find Murch’s insights profoundly beneficial to our craft.

The Evolution of Disney and Animation

nimation perhaps more so than any other genre is representative of how far film has come in its relatively short lifespan. What began as a brief treat for kids before the main feature has become one of the most dominant and lucrative fields of film, and its evolution is parallel to the evolution of technology’s influence on the medium, as its growth and increased popularity are parallels to those of the art form at-large.

Greetings matte painting enthusiasts, it's time once again to take another of NZPete's magical mystery tours into the world of the traditional, hand painted matte shot. Today we will conclude our two part retrospective look at the matte artist's urban landscape, with a great many wonderful examples of the artform, numerous of which haven't been illustrated anywhere until now. Art Gensler’s name will be familiar to architects and designers, but if you haven’t heard of him, here’s a rundown. In 1965, Art founded M. Arthur Gensler Jr. & Associates, which is now the world’s biggest architecture firm in terms of revenue. It creates everything from wine bottle labels to the biggest buildings in the world. Chances are you’ve set foot in a Gensler-designed space at some point in your life, be it a Gap store or the Shanghai Tower.

When it comes to securing work and progressing a career, getting your name out there is one of the first challenges most designers will encounter. Competition is fierce, so if you want to stand out from the crowd and impress a studio or creative director you're going to have to do something truly impressive. There are some pitfalls you need to avoid, however, but thankfully the experts are here to guide you through.

Joe Vallero - Working in LA

      December 5, 2016, 6:04 am
Let me back it up a bit. Joe Vallero is an editor who made the move to LA and has the IMDB page to show it. In our interview with him here we ask him about how making the transition to LA and finding work went for him, any tips he would have for other editors looking to wedge their foot in the proverbial door of big productions and what myths about working in LA hold water and which ones are just fluff.
