• Top 5 Musical Scenes in True Stories

Top 5 Musical Scenes in True Stories

Different genres call for different editing techniques, but sometimes movies don’t really fit any particular kind of genre and as an editor, you just kinda have to go with it. True Stories is one of those movies— it’s borderline comedy and musical, but it’s mostly an entertaining commentary with music. Because it’s done so well, it’s made its way to my personal top 5 movies— and while it is obviously somewhat low budget, technically speaking, the editing ultimately helps to keep it entertaining and progress the story.

    5. Dream Operator (or, the Fashion Show) Once you get over how ridiculous the "fashions" are you realize what it’s trying to say about what’s popular. This is especially true at the beginning, which starts out placed relatively slow so that you get that point right off the top. It picks up about halfway through when the hostess really gets into her singing, and the takes that were placed at the moments that they were make it hilarious to watch.

    4. Wild Wild Life This is the one that you remember from MTV back in 1986. However, in this context you don’t really end up feeling that this scene is 100% music video. It feels more like an extended musical scene in which you really get a feeling for the characters that are exhibited in this small town who’s infrastructure has suddenly expanded. This happens not only through the performers but by the reaction shots of the audience. It sets up how we relate to the rest of movie beautifully.

    3. Love for Sale Here’s another music video insert in the film, but again, with the context that surrounds it, the video not only makes sense but says a whole lot more than it did as a music video. The pacing is also spot on, with image juxtaposition that is post-modernly funny.

    2. Papa Legba/People Like Us I cheated and lumped two songs together, but they flow into one another and they act as one cohesive driving force in the character development of Louis the Bear. The timing is both quick and fun to watch, the shape montage is cleaner than anywhere else in the film, and the intercutting between all the characters and the talent show tell us how Louis grows a little throughout the whole process. Even if it’s through supernatural means.

    1. Puzzling Evidence If my church sang Talking Heads songs with a full choir, organ, and big screen TV commentary, I’d probably go more often, too. Here is a great example of high energy cutting that matches the music but doesn’t take us out of the film. Instead you get sucked into a whole new world of a different kind of commentary— just in case you were somehow getting bored with the crazy little world of tabloid characters in the small town of Virgil, Texas.

As an interesting note, it was conveniently blocked by FOX just as the internet is on blackout strike today in solidarity against SOPA. American friends, please be aware that if SOPA passes, videos like this where I attempt to teach about film editing in a fun way will not be available anymore, even if I am in compliance with the Fair Use clause— in fact, I could be shut down, fined, and/or jailed without due process. If you like the internet and the ability to find information freely and easily, please educate yourself about this bill, and do whatever you can to stop it from passing!

Metropolis is one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, and it's obvious that the editing has a lot to do with it. The expressive nature of the acting is superbly juxtaposed with epically framed shots in such a way that story isn't only easy to follow, but really fun to watch!
