Pray a little and then some more

We've all been there. Feverishly working in Avid and not really paying attention to how often Avid has been saving until you get the spinning wheel. You know what I’m talking about. (On an Apple it is the beach ball of death.) You see that, and you can kiss your unsaved work goodbye.

The Symbiotic Relationship Between Semiotics and C

      December 1, 2016, 1:32 pm
its most basic, semiotics is the study of signs and symbols and their meanings and interpretations. If you want to get a little more complicated, semiotic theory espouses the idea that there’s no actual relationship between the signifier and the signified.

      2017 Best Editing Oscars Predictions

      December 1, 2016, 10:23 am
Last year’s Best Editing field included “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” but this decade that blockbuster and “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” are the only two nominees that were not also Best Picture nominees. The safer bet is to stick with those contenders. Especially until someone actually sees this year’s “Star Wars” film, ‘Rogue One.’ [Nov 29]

6 'Rules' for Good Cutting (Walter Murch)

      December 1, 2016, 6:25 am
If we've learned anything from the forefathers of montage, it's that editing can be used for so much more than continuity. Each cut and transition is a storyteller that can inform your audience about the story, characters, and emotion of a scene. This is something iconic editor and sound designer Walter Murch understood when wrote In the Blink of an Eye, in which he details how to use editing to build a story, a concept he calls the "Rule of Six."

Alone for the Holidays... An Editor's Tale of Loss

      December 1, 2016, 6:25 am
I still remember the last few countdowns, 3..2..1…to 2016. It had so much hope. It always does. After a bumpy 2015, I was looking forward to this year being filled with a lot more happy and a lot less trouble. It’s the same wish I think we all have every year, but I thought for sure this would be it.
