The ASE would like to announce a screening of the Oscar nominated Miracle Fish and a discussion with Director/Writer/Editor Luke Doolan. Miracle Fish is a gripping, visually powerful and masterfully crafted short film, which sees 8 year old Joe having a birthday he’ll never forget. After friends tease him, he sneaks off to the sick bay, wishing everyone in the world would go away. He wakes up to find his dream may have become a reality.

A Day in the Life of a Soap Opera Editor

      May 13, 2010, 4:23 pm
"Days of Our Lives is a completely in-house operation," says lead editor and associate director Lugh Powers. "Deadlines are intense. The production company requires the maximum in speed, flexibility and reliability to produce a daily one-hour program. Because we have such a fast turnaround from production to air, we get pretty aggressive with time management and efforts to streamline the workflow."

      Why is Metadata so Important?

      May 13, 2010, 4:22 pm
I have recently been scanning in slides and negatives from my young adult days, and I’m really wishing I’d entered more metadata at the time. That would have been too easy. Anyway, I thought it was worthwhile examining the different metadata I found/used in indexing these old slides.

      Avoiding Cutting Boredom

      May 12, 2010, 4:14 pm
I will be the first to admit that I don’t always work on some exciting stuff. Every once in a while we’ve all had to fill in the cracks, pay the bills, call it what you want. I get pretty bored in the middle of these edits sometimes. I start to daydream of the last project I was on or surf the internet or twitter or end up watching all SNL Digital Shorts known to man to avoid cutting. When it comes down to it, they need to get done though.

Avid MC to FCP for Color

      May 12, 2010, 4:13 pm
I had today off. Because we had more footage to import (another shoot day), and the producer needed to get her bearings. So I went to the dentist (which everyone should do on a day off, I suppose...right?), and then saw Iron Man 2...

      Absurdity of Pigeonholing Across Mediums

      May 11, 2010, 4:12 pm
Since starting this blog last year I’ve mostly stayed away from writing product reviews, compression tests, opinion pieces, etc. There are more than enough editing blogs out there that do a much finer job on a more regular basis than I could ever hope to. Every once in a while, though...
