There was also Adobe Premiere, and that was OK too, but very few professional editors were using it. Eventually Sony bought a small company in Wisconsin and took over their nascent editing program, which was called Vegas.

It’s been a few months since Adobe officially launched its Content-Aware Fill for video feature in After Effects. VFX artists will of course already be familiar with the need to remove unwanted objects from scenes; Content-Aware Fill is designed to do this somewhat automatically, as it does in Photoshop, but for moving images.

In writing about VFX, I’m sometimes guilty of describing perhaps in too simple terms how a shot or sequence goes from concept to final. There are, of course, so many steps along the way, and I was intrigued how perhaps just one department, such as compositing, handles its part of the process.

What is an animated film? Type that question into Google, and the first response you’ll see comes from FilmSite: “Animated Films are ones in which individual drawings, paintings, or illustrations are photographed frame by frame (stop-frame cinematography). Usually, each frame differs slightly from the one preceding it, giving the illusion of movement when frames are projected in rapid succession at 24 frames per second."
