Final Cut Pro X and Nerds

    April 20, 2011, 12:12 pm
I finally got some time to check out the official unveiling of the brand new Final Cut Pro X! I still consider myself new to the Final Cut world as I've only been using the software for about 3 years now. However, I think finally getting my own copy of FCP was one of the coolest and nerdiest days of my life.

Here's part 1 of my interview with Bobbie O'Steen. Bobbie is an Emmy nominated editor and author of The Invisible Cut and Cut to the Chase. She also interviews editors and examines scenes with them in front of live audiences.

Comedy Cutting Pt. 1 - Cutting Remarks

Watching an editor cut - even if you’re hellbent on becoming one yourself - is excruciating, like watching paint dry. A veteran comedy editor changed that all for me. In 1985 I was hired to assist Dann Cahn on Ediflex, a new non-linear VHS-based editing.

Here is the performance and story edit of NINA. There is no color correction and still some temp camera audio, and obviously, no sound design or mixing. That phase is next.

      Final Cutters Site

If you were looking for a single web destination that is a clearing house for all things Final Cut Pro then FinalCutters has to be that destination. It’s attempting to do what seems like the near impossible and pull together news, blog posts, photos, Twitter tweets, user reviews and ratings and build a community right there at the site.

Here’s a great piece of editor porn that popped up on Twitter from Alan Dennison. Watch only if you’re an editor. (And of age) Otherwise you probably won’t care.

      The Hollywood Cut

      February 28, 2010, 11:27 am
Oscar-winning film editor Hughes Winborne on giving Teen Patti an international look In Los Angeles, when Hughes Winborne, Oscar-winning film editor for Crash, got an offer for Teen Patti, all he knew of Bollywood was that "it makes more films than Hollywood in a year". "That, combined with the chance to visit India for the first time, made me accept the project," he says, over e-mail from the US...

      Using Text, Titles and Graphics

      February 28, 2010, 11:26 am
Both Avid and Final Cut have fine basic text generators that allow you to do some pretty cool and simple text work. I’m not talking about the Marquee tool in Avid or LiveType in Final Cut. I’m just talking about the basic text tool that comes with the programs. I think it’s important to learn these tools first.

Pulled Wools and Gotcha Moments in Shutter Island

      February 27, 2010, 11:26 am
Although obviously reminiscent of the films of Alfred Hitchcock, the film that Martin Scorsese's latest, "Shutter Island", reminds me most of is Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" due to my post-screening reaction to the film. It is not a secret that I consider both directors to be two of my cinematic heroes.
