    Classified Section Added

    July 9, 2009, 4:04 pm
A Classifieds section has been added. We've received many emails about posting things directly onto the Art of the Guillotine Main Page. Instead we revived the classifieds section. If you want to buy something, sell something, look for work, post a job etc. You can do it there. Realize we are not responsible for what is posted there and who contacts you.

Quickshots: It’s 40 years since ‘Close Encount

Steven Spielberg’s Close Encounters of the Third Kind was the other big sci-film of 1977. In a year without Star Wars, the film’s effects practitioners would likely have won the visual effects Oscar (they were, of course, nominated).

Kong Skull Island VFX Team Secrets

      August 28, 2017, 4:18 pm
Seeing our favorite monsters come to life on screen gets more incredible each year as technology makes them bigger, scarier, and more realistic. King Kong is one of the most sympathetic monsters to stomp onto movie screens since Frankenstein. Sometimes enemy, other times hero, Kong often displays human emotions and can be both fearsome and gentle. The overgrown gorilla has evolved through many iterations since his original 1933 appearance. The visual effects masters that developed Kong for Skull Island at ILM released a video showing how he was created from hair to heart.

EditShare XStream EFS Supports Open Road Entertain

      August 27, 2017, 1:21 pm
As a powerhouse broadcast and theatrical marketing company with over 40 workstations dedicated to the creative process, Open Road Entertainment needed a media-aware storage platform that would better manage our rapidly growing business. Our first move was to get a file-level shared storage solution. We had been using volume-based storage for many years, but it was no longer supporting the needs of our growing business. Since our existing storage solution could not be re-partitioned, the team was often struggling for space. Projects would quickly outgrow and absorb two, three and four volumes. We were being stifled by the platform's single-write, multi-read limitations and needed a tool with increased bandwidth, scalability and reliability.

AE Project Diary: 4) Mixing up a cake with maths

      August 25, 2017, 9:56 am
I like cakes a lot, especially cakes with lots of layers. After Effects also has lots of layers, but when you have to start doing boring and repetitive tasks those ones don’t seem as much fun as eating a nice slice of opera gateaux. This project diary takes you through a real-life project where I was faced with the prospect of having to animate lots and lots of layers – both the After Effects and the cake varieties – for a very long time. And I really didn’t want to do it by hand, so I looked for a way to get After Effects to do as much of the work for me as possible.
