I've been trying to decide whether Apple will release - or even show - Final Cut Pro X at the World Wide Developers Conference next week. I'm starting to think that they may do neither; it's not like the World Wide Developers Conference is a huge video editors event. It just seems the wrong location to roll it out. Which suggests that they may roll it out a week or two after the WWDC at the earliest.

Although obviously reminiscent of the films of Alfred Hitchcock, the film that Martin Scorsese's latest, "Shutter Island", reminds me most of is Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" due to my post-screening reaction to the film. It is not a secret that I consider both directors to be two of my cinematic heroes.

Last night I enjoyed being on an Oscar panel at the Writer’s Store (a terrific store with wonderful film folks) in LA with three other writers of film books: Chris Riley The Hollywood Standard - 2nd edition, Marcie Begleiter From Word to Image 2nd edition, and Michael Hauge Selling Your Story in 60 Seconds, and moderator-writer Chris Vogler The Writer’s Journey 3rd edition.

RED’s Scarlet appears to be just around the corner and both Sony and Panasonic seem to be responding to the challenge of the upstart photo manufacturers. No matter what acronym you use – DSMC, HD-DSLR, HDSLR – these hybrid HD video / still photo cameras have grabbed everyone’s attention. 2010 may indeed be the year that hybrid digital SLR cameras hit their stride.

Late last year I edited a multi-camera concert for country artist Gary Allan. It was shot at the House of Blues in Chicago on Canon 5Ds. The 5Ds gave us some really great images that’s kind of unusual in a live show.

Working in the editorial department on Alice in Wonderland, JC Bond was the point of first contact for principal photography, assembling scenes as quickly as director Tim Burton could shoot them. He was also the gatekeeper for the film's extensive visual-effects content, which he received and analyzed before it was cut into the movie. Working on a team led by film editor Chris Lebenzon, Bond made sure thousands of pieces of content fell into place as expected in the editorial pipeline...
