In early August, the American Cinema Editors (ACE) held its second annual EditFest Los Angeles at the Universal Studiuos lot in Universal City. From documentary to comedy and from to television to narrative features, this was a rare opportunity for people to hear editors discuss the art, craft, and process of editing. Following are some of the highlights of several of the panel discussions:

An important question I often get is "how do I join the union?" This question comes from many people I meet, from established editors to the young people just starting out in the Hollywood. The catch is that the answer isn’t at all that simple. The question should be: "should I join the union?" Putting it simply, if you’re asking that question, the answer is not quite yet. But that’s just the beginning of the story.

For striping TC (time code) on Canon files I use a free utility called QtChange. With QtChange, if the correct settings are not used, it is extremely easy to permanently corrupt a Canon .mov. Result, reshoot. Use with studied caution, please. Also, do not try QtChange on Canon .mov files which are on a Win NT drive.

The introduction of the Matrox MX02 Mini actually makes a little bit of video history: It’s the first third-party hardware option Avid deemed worthy of being allowed into the exclusive club with Media Composer. Matrox is well-known for its quality and value, so the partnership with Avid bodes well for both companies.

Steve Jobs e-mail reassurances notwithstanding, this is a question that’s getting asked a lot in editing suites these days, especially those with large Final Cut Pro/Final Cut Studio installations. While users of other software; Adobe CS Suites including Premiere and After Effects, Avid’s Media Composer, Sony Vegas and Square Box Systems CatDV just to name a few, get new features and powerful upgrades, Final Cut Pro editors are stuck waiting on the sidelines.
