  • Top 5 Things to do While the Footage Renders

Top 5 Things to do While the Footage Renders

    July 6, 2011, 11:53 am
Rendering is always one of those things that create dead time during a project. This is especially true for the independent freelancer with the last generation of equipment. But there's no reason to let that time go to waste!

    5. Naptime!
This is one I only recommend if you're working long hours or if you know that you won't get reamed by the producer if you get walked in on (while he may not appreciate you sleeping on your shift, he will appreciate the better job a well-rested you will do). Don't abuse the render-nap, though— if you oversleep then you'll be kicking yourself.
    4. Clean the House/Office/Suite
Cleanliness is next to godliness, and keeping your workstation dust free will make you more productive without you even realizing it. Even with a short render of 5 minutes you can bust out the windex and wipe down your desk, giving it a sheen that will trick your brain into thinking "fresh." The rest of the crew will also be impressed at your impeccable immaculateness— the highly allergic director will thank you and the producer will remember that you have an attention to detail (which might be carried over to your editing).
    3. Smartphone Apps
From pocket games that aren't too mentally involving to a quick update on the local news, smartphone apps are great for the short renders to kill a little bit of time. It also helps to distract your probably-entrenched-in-the-project brain for a minute, ensuring that you don't burn out and helping you to go back into the project with a fresh mind.
    2. Make Food
If you work at home, then I can't think of a better time to make a sandwich than during a long render. If you're stuck in the office, then stock up the fridge or your cupboard/desk with sandwich fixings— you'll be glad you did on those days where you accidentally oversleep and didn't have time to pack. If you're in a suite, then you can still make a fresh sandwich if you bring a bag full of sandwich fixings. If it's a really long render, then you can get even more creative!
    1. Sharpen Your Skills
The internet has a plethora of information out there about everything, but for an editor (or anyone in any area of post production for that matter) video tutorials, dedicated news sites (like the Art of the Guillotine, for example! *wink wink*), and forums can be the key to expanding your skill set and making you more desirable as an editor. Read about colour theory and make life easier for the colourist! Join a forum to ask sound mixers what you should look out for! The more you know about your craft and the ever-evolving technology, the better player you'll be in the game of port-production. You'll also help projects run more smoothly.

As an interesting note, it was conveniently blocked by FOX just as the internet is on blackout strike today in solidarity against SOPA. American friends, please be aware that if SOPA passes, videos like this where I attempt to teach about film editing in a fun way will not be available anymore, even if I am in compliance with the Fair Use clause— in fact, I could be shut down, fined, and/or jailed without due process. If you like the internet and the ability to find information freely and easily, please educate yourself about this bill, and do whatever you can to stop it from passing!

Metropolis is one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, and it's obvious that the editing has a lot to do with it. The expressive nature of the acting is superbly juxtaposed with epically framed shots in such a way that story isn't only easy to follow, but really fun to watch!
