  • Top 5 Back to the Future Scenes

Top 5 Back to the Future Scenes

    September 7, 2011, 12:16 pm
Great scott! I must've blown a hole in the space-time continuum with my 1.21 "Jiggawatt" blog entry…

    5. Back to the Future, Part II ,Almanac Snag in the Tunnel
The best parts of this scene are the reaction takes. They're peppered in between action with perfect pacing and an eye movement that's easy to follow, and they're animated and goofy without losing the energy of the scene!
    4. Back to the Future ,Back to the Future, Finally
By the time we get to the lightening strike that will send Marty back to 1985, the pace has already been quickening throughout the previous scenes. This brings up the tension to the appropriate point for the climax, which makes those fire trails feel so rewarding— even for us, the viewers!
    3. Back to the Future ,Playin' With the Band
Here's a fun and energetic montage that has great eye movement, and more great reaction shots. With all three movies, it's pretty clear that getting everyone's awkward expressions during weird moments was a priority. This scene is no exception, especially when Marty starts rocking out hardcore.
    2. Back to the Future ,Skateboard Chase
This is by far the best chase scene out of all of the Back to the Future chase scenes. It's cleverly edited with well-paced action and reaction shots that are put together to tell the story beautifully without having to say much.
    1. Back to the Future, Part III ,The Last Train to Futuresville
As if maneuvering on a moving train that's destined for total destruction wasn't already nerve-wracking, having the love of your life jump onto the back without warning can make things pretty heavy. The energy in this scene is the most noteworthy part of it, as I think that some of the shots seemed to be repeated (or at least they were so similar to each other that it was hard to tell). Nonetheless, the tension and excitement created by the whole thing ends the whole trilogy with a worthy bang. Great scott!

As an interesting note, it was conveniently blocked by FOX just as the internet is on blackout strike today in solidarity against SOPA. American friends, please be aware that if SOPA passes, videos like this where I attempt to teach about film editing in a fun way will not be available anymore, even if I am in compliance with the Fair Use clause— in fact, I could be shut down, fined, and/or jailed without due process. If you like the internet and the ability to find information freely and easily, please educate yourself about this bill, and do whatever you can to stop it from passing!

Metropolis is one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, and it's obvious that the editing has a lot to do with it. The expressive nature of the acting is superbly juxtaposed with epically framed shots in such a way that story isn't only easy to follow, but really fun to watch!

I can't think of anything more scary than having a robot from the future relentlessly hunt you down because of something you haven't done yet (and didn't even know you were planning to do). Well, maybe I can think of a couple scarier things, but really, robo-Schwarzenegger is pretty high up there!
