  • Top 5 edited scenes in Metropolis

Top 5 edited scenes in Metropolis

    September 21, 2011, 4:25 pm
Metropolis is one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, and it's obvious that the editing has a lot to do with it. The expressive nature of the acting is superbly juxtaposed with epically framed shots in such a way that story isn't only easy to follow, but really fun to watch!

    5. "The New Robo-Maria"
It's interesting how the introduction of flat shapes moving about on the screen can evoke emotion from viewers. It reminds me of the work of some of the early abstract animators like Oskar Fischinger or Hans Richter. This scene is a great example of how movement, shapes, and visual montage can be just as important in the emotive storytelling of a film as the acting.
    4. "Daddy! I've just seen the horrors of the Machine Room!"
Here the takes that were chosen really stand out as genuine. We feel the confusion and the frustration of Freder as he confronts his father about the horrible conditions he just witnessed.
    3. "Intro"
The entire opening of this film is beautiful to watch— This era in cinema was truly a time where great care was taken in the movement of the eyes artistically around the screen, while at the same time conveying the idea of constant monotonous time being passed via a large machine.
    2. "Burn the witch!"
The drama and energy of this whole scene is due to the deliberate build up of tension through shot choice. The cuts are faster in this part than the rest of the film, but slow compared to today's standards. Instead, it relies on the energy within the shots themselves, and as a consequence it seems to move just as quickly while holding our emotion.
    1. "The Dance/Exciting the Workers"
Here the pacing suits the dancing and the movements perfectly. Our eyes are hypnotized by the smart montage and we feel like joining in on the riot. As an integral part of the story, this scene has importance within the larger context of the film, but it's so artfully constructed that it stands well on its own.
Stay tuned next week for the premiere of the vlog version of the EDL!! I'm excited, so you should be too!

As an interesting note, it was conveniently blocked by FOX just as the internet is on blackout strike today in solidarity against SOPA. American friends, please be aware that if SOPA passes, videos like this where I attempt to teach about film editing in a fun way will not be available anymore, even if I am in compliance with the Fair Use clause— in fact, I could be shut down, fined, and/or jailed without due process. If you like the internet and the ability to find information freely and easily, please educate yourself about this bill, and do whatever you can to stop it from passing!

I can't think of anything more scary than having a robot from the future relentlessly hunt you down because of something you haven't done yet (and didn't even know you were planning to do). Well, maybe I can think of a couple scarier things, but really, robo-Schwarzenegger is pretty high up there!
