Apple is introducing a new update to Final Cut Pro X, the most popular version of its professional video editing software, with more than 2.5 million seats. Final Cut Pro 10.4.1 introduces a groundbreaking format from Apple, ProRes RAW, which combines the visual and workflow benefits of RAW video with the performance of ProRes. The update also adds advanced closed captioning tools that allow video editors to easily view, edit and deliver captions from right within the app. Apple is also adding complementary new features to Final Cut Pro companion apps, Motion and Compressor.

Well there goes my plans for finally jumping ship altogether to the “PC Master Race” and getting rid of my ProRes addition once and for all… just kidding, I am still considering leaving the Apple ecosystem altogether (after all, I am in the shittiest position possible – editing with Premiere Pro on a Macbook Pro), but this latest bombshell announcement from Apple has got my world turned upside down once again and put a wrench in my plans (once again). And for the first time ever, I am probably going to be buying Final Cut Pro X… I’ve dreaded even uttering these words for so long, but with the latest Apple announcement I am about to tell you about, I will probably be joining the Dark Side soon.

ProRes RAW is here, a new high-efficiency codec that enables instant playback and editing without the need for any conversion. ProRes codecs have been an industry standard for a long time, but the codecs themselves are getting a little long in the tooth. NAB 2018 will see an update to another NLE as Final Cut Pro X will hit version 10.4.1. This comes just a few months after the big 10.4 update that brought new color tools among the major new features. This is an incremental update with a few noteworthy features including closed captioning tools, enhanced exporting options for Roles, an updated Compressor and what I think might be the most noteworthy feature in a while as far as Apple pro video goes, a new ProRes flavor in ProRes RAW.
