      Fix FCP's Media Management

      May 29, 2010, 5:15 pm
Media management has long been considered Apple Final Cut Pro’s Achilles’ Heel. In reality, FCP has gotten better in this regard and does a pretty decent job of linking project master clips to media.

When Action 3D Productions hired an editor to cut the concert film Phish 3D, it made sense that they’d go to Don Wilson's Americana Media. Wilson is an Emmy-winning producer-director-editor whose experience in the industry stretches back to the early days of MTV, when he was cutting promo clips for any number of top-tier acts.

"This is not Media Composer," says Avid senior product designer Frank Capria. "I could be anywhere. All the media you’re going to see is in Tewksbury. You just clone it." The Avid system is so quick and looks so much like Media Composer that Capria has to explain to the audience that the video he’s editing is actually being edited thousands of miles away and streaming back.

It’s obvious when talking to Hamilton that he’s as passionate about technology as he is about storytelling. "I love the technology," he says. "My first love is editing a scene—after all, a film is written on the page and rewritten in the edits—but I also love working on intricate visual effects, or building a theatrical sound track."

Since so many industry professionals typically use a variety of production and post-production tools on virtually every project, it’s really important to move media and sequences between tools seamlessly.

Everybody knows the Timewarp only applies to video. But what if you want to change the speed of your audio as well? In this episode, we’ll do just that with the help of a couple of different AudioSuite plugins that come with Media Composer.

AppleInsider had an article on May 18, 2010 which was titled "Apple Scaling Final Cut Studio Apps to fit prosumers" which generated a ton of blogosphere panic. Even I was caught up in the rumor mongering here, reacting to a post I’d read on Twitter and then, after reading the AI piece, tweeting about it myself.

      Avid Embracing Third Party Hardware?

      May 27, 2010, 5:08 pm
What this seems to suggest is that the hardware barrier is soon to fall. One of the most common criticisms of Avid’s systems in the last few years has been the cost of proprietary hardware, while Final Cut Pro and Premiere have been supporting a wide range of low-cost I/O hardware.

OK...this is something that "Avid Editors" brag about all the time. They can load a sequence into the Viewer, and then click a toggle that will then show them that sequence on the timeline. The PROGRAM (or Canvas for you FCP peeps) timeline is replaced by the PREVIEW (or Viewer) sequence...
