I learned a hard lesson today about Final Cut Pro X after doing some roundtrip testing between FCPX and the newly released Resolve 8. That lesson was to be very careful when using clips that FCPX is referencing in other video applications.

The engineers over at Blackmagic Design continue their mad dash to update and upgrade DaVinci Resolve. The end of last week saw the release of Resolve 8.1. This comes after the huge 7 to 8 upgrade we saw earlier in the year but this incremental update to 8.1 adds some pretty significant features itself.

Color correction falls into three categories: primary, secondary and 'looks." Primary color correction changes all pixels in a clip’s frame. Secondary corrections are limited to a region within the frame; be it an object, a person's face, or a tonal or color range like the sky. Looks are moods you try to set using color. For example: harsh and cold or soft and warm.

Last October, I had the rare opportunity to edit a feature film called Courageous, which is in theaters now. Courageous was the number one new movie the weekend it opened (September 30th) and the number four movie over all and it’s stayed in the top six for the last three weeks, with its per-theater box office at the number one spot for two weeks, and still at number 2.
