This is the first of several episodes covering a workflow for using Red Digital Cinema Cameras with your Avid editing application. In this episode, we’ll convert R3D footage to DNxHD MXF files for offline editing. For this, we’ll use Avid’s Metafuze. Then, we’ll quickly import the files into the Avid, so you can edit away!

When Action 3D Productions hired an editor to cut the concert film Phish 3D, it made sense that they’d go to Don Wilson's Americana Media. Wilson is an Emmy-winning producer-director-editor whose experience in the industry stretches back to the early days of MTV, when he was cutting promo clips for any number of top-tier acts.

"This is not Media Composer," says Avid senior product designer Frank Capria. "I could be anywhere. All the media you’re going to see is in Tewksbury. You just clone it." The Avid system is so quick and looks so much like Media Composer that Capria has to explain to the audience that the video he’s editing is actually being edited thousands of miles away and streaming back.

It’s obvious when talking to Hamilton that he’s as passionate about technology as he is about storytelling. "I love the technology," he says. "My first love is editing a scene—after all, a film is written on the page and rewritten in the edits—but I also love working on intricate visual effects, or building a theatrical sound track."

AppleInsider had an article on May 18, 2010 which was titled "Apple Scaling Final Cut Studio Apps to fit prosumers" which generated a ton of blogosphere panic. Even I was caught up in the rumor mongering here, reacting to a post I’d read on Twitter and then, after reading the AI piece, tweeting about it myself.

What this seems to suggest is that the hardware barrier is soon to fall. One of the most common criticisms of Avid’s systems in the last few years has been the cost of proprietary hardware, while Final Cut Pro and Premiere have been supporting a wide range of low-cost I/O hardware.

OK...this is something that "Avid Editors" brag about all the time. They can load a sequence into the Viewer, and then click a toggle that will then show them that sequence on the timeline. The PROGRAM (or Canvas for you FCP peeps) timeline is replaced by the PREVIEW (or Viewer) sequence...
