Inside The Edit: Dexter Opening Credits

      April 17, 2012, 11:33 am
GOOD MORNING. DEXTER MORGAN I missed the first season of Dexter. I didn't watch a single episode but slowly, everyone around me started talking about Miami Metro's loveable serial killer. A trusted friend of mine swore it was a show I had to check out. So I waited for the Season One box set.

Well… 2011 was indeed an epic year for The Athletic Nerd. There are so many things that stood out in 2011 and I’ll be writing about all of them… When I get back from holidays that is! The next few weeks are packed with family, friends and some much needed time off. When the blog...

Deleting My Short Film's Old Files...

      December 8, 2011, 11:51 am
SAYING GOODBYE TO FOOTAGE YOU LOVED I was busy putting the finishing touches on a new short film called The Climb and I realized that space was running low on my main hard drive. So I turned my attention to the original files for my last short film Playing Through. Almost 4 years ago to...

Looking for editing software but don't know

      October 27, 2011, 9:24 am
Every editor needs software.  I started with Dazzle studio way back in the day.  Today, I use a combination of Final Cut Studio at home and Quantel at work.  As a beginner, it can be difficult to justify hundreds of dollars on an editing platform like Final Cut or even thousands on an Avid.

Editing A Short Film: Little Moments

THERE'S NOTHING LIKE EDITING THAT FINAL SHOT Taking a moment to watch a complete short film for the first time is such a gratifying experience. As you watch you think about all the creative choices you made and how everything came together… … And then you start catching tiny frames you can’t wait to tweak...

Editing A Short Film: Is This Scene Boring 2

      September 8, 2011, 3:07 pm
Earlier this week, I posted an article detailing a very long and unfortunately boring raw scene I edited and the steps I took to make it better. Long scenes that consist of 2 characters talking are extremely tricky to pull off. The challenge is finding ways to cut things out that aren't working without sacrificing...

Short Film Editing: Is This Scene Boring?

      September 6, 2011, 11:49 am
I spent a lot of time experimenting with footage from 17 West's upcoming short film The Climb. When we shot the film, the intention was always to try different things and evolve as an editor. The majority of my editing experience lies in the fast paced world of live television. As you can imagine, there...

Tough Cuts: Letting Go Of A Scene

      July 14, 2011, 11:01 am
IN OR OUT? I showed some footage of my short film, The Climb to my producing partner Eric the other day. The plan was simple. I was going to show him the new sequences I just locked and then go over the entire film scene by scene. What I failed to mention to him was...

Inside The Edit: Mission Impossible 4 Trailer

Mission Impossible 3 was by far my favorite film in the franchise. J.J Abrams blew me away. It had the best villain, the best action and the best story. It was also the first movie to really show Tom Cruise’s Ethan Hunt as a human being with family and love at stake.
