How to make...lighting with your hands!

      June 12, 2019, 12:19 pm
In writing about VFX, I’m sometimes guilty of describing perhaps in too simple terms how a shot or sequence goes from concept to final. There are, of course, so many steps along the way, and I was intrigued how perhaps just one department, such as compositing, handles its part of the process.

When is an animated film not an animated film

      June 12, 2019, 9:10 am
What is an animated film? Type that question into Google, and the first response you’ll see comes from FilmSite: “Animated Films are ones in which individual drawings, paintings, or illustrations are photographed frame by frame (stop-frame cinematography). Usually, each frame differs slightly from the one preceding it, giving the illusion of movement when frames are projected in rapid succession at 24 frames per second."

      Having Variety in Editing Software

      June 12, 2019, 6:33 am
Last time, I talked about editing software that is subscription-based, namely, Adobe Premiere Pro. As I mentioned, although I was concerned about the subscription aspect of the product, even more important is having the tools I need.

Working with Different Frame Rates in Resolve

      June 12, 2019, 6:33 am
I would be hard-pressed to admit that I don’t love Resolve — because I do. It’s been a pleasure to watch it grow from “just” color-grading software to a leading NLE. However, every so often, I come across a feature that doesn’t like to respond to my request, which feels like your favorite dog chewing up a prized possession.
