    CAMBRIDGE, MA -- MOTU (www.motu.com) has unveiled Digital Performer Version 8, a major upgrade to the company's flagship audio workstation software. Already a Mac application, Digital Performer 8 will be available on both Mac OS X and Windows 7, and will operate in 32-bit or 64-bit mode which it ships in the Spring. On Windows, Version 8 will support VST plug-ins and Rewire.

      LONDON — Union VFX (unionvfx.com) provided visual effects services for Victoria & Abdul, the new film directed by Stephen Frears. The film is based on the book of same name about the real-life relationship between Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom and her Indian Muslim servant Abdul Karim. It stars Judi Dench, Ali Fazal, Michael Gambon, Eddie Izzard, Tim Pigott-Smith and Adeel Akhtar and hit theaters in late September.

      LOS ANGELES  – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (oscars.org) has announced that 20 films are in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 90th Academy Awards. The Academy’s visual effects branch executive committee determined the preliminary shortlist. Later this month, the committee will select the 10 films that will advance to nominations voting.

      OXFORD, UK – In Marvel Studios’ latest blockbuster, Thor: Ragnarok, an electrified god of thunder fights off an army of undead soldiers high above the waters on the narrow Rainbow Bridge, as the citizens of Asgard watch on in fear. The scene is a highlight of the movie, but also a complicated one, as the script called for dozens of characters to be onscreen at once.
