A LUT is like a music loop or sample within a song, it can contribute to a grade, but it shouldn’t BE the grade. Automatic correction is like autotune, it can solve problems, but it shouldn’t be the main flavor of your grade. Plugins are like audio effects, a bit can give music texture, but too much makes it look like you’re concealing problems.

DaVinci Resolve is quickly becoming the hottest NLE on the market, which isn’t surprising since you can download a copy for free with access to 90 percent of its features. However, while most free versions of programs like this offer a simplified form of the premium version, DaVinci Resolve does not. As a result, loading up the software for the first time can be very daunting.

Deluxe has opened a new color grading theater called Stage One. It is equipped with a large Stewart and RealDs screens and Barco projectors, as well as advanced color grading, audio and editorial systems. I sometimes think that we're protected from the full horror of the World Wars by the poor quality of the moving images from the two 20th century conflicts. Equally you could argue that the existence of film at all hammers home the gritty reality more than words ever could. But the results of Peter Jacksons' work support the former of these two suggestions. It's mind blowing. We'll talk about the technical side in a moment, but first, just look at the footage. It's astonishing. It's been stabilised, clocked at the correct speed, and very obviously (if you're familiar with film from this era) been cleaned up. And then it's had colour added.and effectively

HDR is a topic we’ve covered in great detail on PVC, and the appeal of the format can be simplified by saying that if 4K is about more pixels, HDR is about better pixels, and that’s a difference audiences have come to recognize. Blackmagic Design’s today announced that DaVinci Resolve was used to color grade the film ‘Benjamin’s Last Day at Katong Swimming Complex’. The film, finished in HDR, recently won the George Lucas Award at Japan’s most prestigious short film competition.
