Last Thursday, MPSE brought their acclaimed "Sound Show" series to Manhattan for a packed crowd at SVA's Silas Theater. With the gifted crew responsible for Martin Scorsese's "Shutter Island" sharing the inspiration for and process behind the film's soundscape, the audience got a seldom seen glimpse inside a completely unique collaboration. "I'm blown away at the level they're working on," sound designer Martin Biehn said over cocktails at the Paramount Pictures' sponsored after-party, "You hear a film, but when you strip away the layers and really start to understand what goes into the process - you hear it in a completely different light." Phil Stockton(Salt, The Departed), Eugene Gearty (Inside Man, Broke Back Mountain) and Tom Fleischman (Angels & Demons, Marley & Me) screened three clips in various stages of sound design, from production audio, the raw and often flawed material they're given, to the ADR and foley tracks, where voices are re-recorded and sounds re-created, to the full mix with music, effects and the final balance of the sound design process. Event co-producer Manhattan Edit Workshop also announced new training courses in Pro Tools 9, the industry standard for film sound design, coming in January 2011. MEWShop owner Josh Apter added, "My first real job in film was a location sound recordist, so I came to all this from an audio perspective. Bringing classes in sound design through Pro Tools has been a goal for years. I can hardly wait for the first class." For more information about future MPSE Sound Shows, check out www.MPSE.org. Visit www.mewshop.com for info on classes in Pro Tools, Avid, Final Cut Studio, Adobe CS5 and more.

      Grading Similes

      October 20, 2018, 6:50 am
A LUT is like a music loop or sample within a song, it can contribute to a grade, but it shouldn’t BE the grade. Automatic correction is like autotune, it can solve problems, but it shouldn’t be the main flavor of your grade. Plugins are like audio effects, a bit can give music texture, but too much makes it look like you’re concealing problems.

In this week’s podcast, Russ, Dan and Julian discuss ask whether bug fixes should only be availble to current Pro Tools subscribers, they talk about the choices at the inexpensive end of the monitor market, they share community feedback, and their finds of the week. Also in this week's Podcast, there is an opportunity to get an exclusive discount of an Exponential Audio plug-in, but you have to listen to the podcast to get the discount code!

      DaVinci Resolve 15 Crash Course

      October 19, 2018, 5:37 am
DaVinci Resolve is quickly becoming the hottest NLE on the market, which isn’t surprising since you can download a copy for free with access to 90 percent of its features. However, while most free versions of programs like this offer a simplified form of the premium version, DaVinci Resolve does not. As a result, loading up the software for the first time can be very daunting.
