    I can't think of anything more scary than having a robot from the future relentlessly hunt you down because of something you haven't done yet (and didn't even know you were planning to do). Well, maybe I can think of a couple scarier things, but really, robo-Schwarzenegger is pretty high up there!

    5. Ladies Night, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
    I'm mostly putting this one here because I thought it was particularly inspired— it follows suit with all the previous films well and doesn't take itself too seriously. For once people aren't surprised that T-101 is in his birthday suit!
    4. Melted Liquid Metal, Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)
    This scene quickly became a classic scene that has been redone in parodies ever since. The cutting is smooth, making sure that our eyes are going to the right places on the screen. The pace quickens as the liquid coagulates, amping up the tension as the viewer realizes exactly what's happening. Just when you thought that they finally stopped him, he reshapes, much to everyone's chagrin.
    3. Disco, The Terminator (1984)
    Here is a great example of tension building through pacing. As the scene continues, it very slowly turns into slow motion— a slow motion that gets slower and slower as T-101 realizes where Sarah Connor is and starts to walk toward her. The cuts match the frame speed and before you know it we're on the edge of our seats.
    2. Copless Cop Car Chase, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003)
    The first three movies are completely comprised of pursuit scenes, so finding a chase sequence isn't hard. They are all well edited, but this one in particular stood out to me. The action was incredibly smooth and yet the energy wasn't affected at all. In fact, you feel like you're in the cars! Great eye movement and pacing is matched, making a really well edited chase scene. Not to mention that this is probably the most destruction we've witnessed out of all the films so far…
    1. Helicopter Down, Terminator: Salvation (2009)
    This entire movie was edited beautifully, but the long take where John Connor is inside the helicopter really takes the cake. We the viewers are sitting inside the helicopter, strapped in along with him. As the chopper gets hit, spirals out of control, and crashes, we're right in it in real time. Here, no obvious cuts are made, but the scene doesn't need it. It's intense, to say the least. The take is so seamless, in fact, that I actually wonder if it was indeed simply a long take— it seems to me that something must've been done in the VFX department to put together a couple takes to get the action down. If this is the case then it's truly an editing feat to cut together takes in such a way that it doesn't look cut at all! Either way, this makes it clear that sometimes the best edit requires no obvious cut.

      As an interesting note, it was conveniently blocked by FOX just as the internet is on blackout strike today in solidarity against SOPA. American friends, please be aware that if SOPA passes, videos like this where I attempt to teach about film editing in a fun way will not be available anymore, even if I am in compliance with the Fair Use clause— in fact, I could be shut down, fined, and/or jailed without due process. If you like the internet and the ability to find information freely and easily, please educate yourself about this bill, and do whatever you can to stop it from passing!

      Metropolis is one of the most influential science fiction films of all time, and it's obvious that the editing has a lot to do with it. The expressive nature of the acting is superbly juxtaposed with epically framed shots in such a way that story isn't only easy to follow, but really fun to watch!
