William Goldberg on being Truthful in the editing

      December 14, 2018, 6:13 am
The Netflix drama 22 July chronicles the 2011 Norway massacre hat left 77 dead when a far-right extremist detonated a car bomb in Oslo before carrying out a mass shooting at a teen leadership camp on the nearby island of Utoya. During Deadline’s The Contenders Los Angeles recently, editor William Goldenberg discussed how he and director Paul Greengrass adapted the real-life tragedy and its aftermath while taking care not to exploit the incident and those involved.

ADR Sessions - What Are Benefits Of A 2 Person Wor

      December 13, 2018, 10:19 am
Why does ADR get a bad reputation especially amongst actors and directors who say “it just doesn’t work” or “it is never as good as the original”? In my experience, bad ADR primarily comes down to the performance of the actor in the studio on the ADR record day but there are other factors that can play a part. Are the correct mics being used? It is a properly sized room and a good team of people present on the record day? These will always help make sure bad ADR won’t happen as long as the talent is on form.

The Hardest Effect I Have Ever Pulled Off

      December 13, 2018, 10:15 am
For nearly as long as we’ve had motion pictures, we’ve had illusions to put in them — and they’ve never come easy. The year 1893 saw the first public viewing of a kinetoscope film, Blacksmith Scene, and just two years later, early filmmaker Alfred Clark executed what is commonly regarded as the first special effect. In a gruesome short about the beheading of Mary, Queen of Scots, Clark stopped the film just as the blade was about to chop off Mary’s head, instructed the actors to freeze, took the one playing Mary off the set, replaced her with a dummy, and started the film again before bringing the poor dummy to its decapitated fate.
