In the last three decades of the 20th century, when film was still the dominant medium, there was one piece of equipment that, close to being universal, was an essential piece of kit for the smallest documentary to the grandest feature film. It was the Swiss-made Nagra audio recorder. And perhaps the most definitive of these was the Nagra IV series.

Some of the pre-release buzz around The Irishman was … skeptical. Yes, director Martin Scorsese remains one of the most celebrated filmmakers in the world, but wasn’t he repeating himself by making another mob movie starring Robert De Niro? How could he justify a three-and-a-half-hour running time? And what about reports that the film was using de-aging techniques to allow De Niro, Joe Pesci and Al Pacino to play younger versions of their characters in the film? Was Scorsese’s character-and-performance-driven approach compatible with VFX-heavy filmmaking?

As long as there have been cables, there’s been someone willing to take a cable, dip it in liquid nitrogen and polish it on a maiden’s knee, then sell it for 17 times the going rate. This sort of chicanery serves to make most people cautious about different and expensive cables bearing extravagant claims of specialness, usually quite rightly.

The DaVinci Resolve to AVID round trip is an industry-standard workflow used by many professional DITs, assistant editors, and post houses. This tutorial is ideal for assistant editors who are beginning an assembly of a show while production is still underway. This process uses DaVinci Resolve to create master clips that you can ingest in AVID, without consolidating or transcoding your media. This is because the proxies you’ll create in DaVinci Resolve are in the MXF OP-Atom codec, which allows you to drop them into your Avid MediaFiles folder and begin editing immediately.
