VFX - Why Are You Stuck

Welcome to Episode 230! This is one I recorded for all of us when we don’t get the wins that we want and we get baffled by that. I wanted to make it really clear as to why that is.

More of the social (VFX) lives of Hollywood

      January 21, 2020, 2:27 pm
Back in 2017, I collected a whole bunch of social media postings from actors, directors and filmmakers where they had published pics of themselves or others doing various VFX-related things like being 3D scanned, wearing mocap gear or appearing on greenscreens.

Script Analysis for Sound Design, Raymond Chandler

      January 21, 2020, 2:27 pm
The deluge. A deluge of memories for Betty as a deluge of voices in the flashback courtroom turn into a literal deluge of rain outside her hotel room on the balcony where, at the bottom of page 56 she soon discovers Mitchell’s dead body on the chaise lounge. Playback! This sequence solidifies the water theme in the movie. We equate rain/water with sadness and longing.

How to Key Green Screen Footage in AE

      January 21, 2020, 2:26 pm
Of all the editing software, you’ll probably get the best key results in After Effects. There are several methods for working with After Effects green screen footage. Adobe recommends using a built-in preset with a combination of three effects. This method works great for beginners (and experts) because it produces quick (and usually great) results. We’ll walk you through how to do this step-by-step.

      EDITING

Joker Editor on Ambiguity, That Ending, and Joaqui

      January 20, 2020, 8:23 pm
The Warner Bros. film Joker, which racked up 11 Oscar nominations last week, is not your traditional comic book adaptation. That’s true of not just the narrative of the film—in that it’s a character study more than a set piece-driven story—but also the filmmaking and construction of what we see onscreen. Director/co-writer Todd Phillips pushed for a gritty, naturalistic aesthetic that reflected the world inhabited by Joaquin Phoenix’s Arthur Fleck, and everything we see in the film is from Arthur’s point of view. Indeed, subjectivity plays a major role as the story progresses and the audience begins to question if what we’re seeing is real, or if it’s simply what Arthur wishes to see.
