SAN FRANCISCO — Autodesk (www.autodesk.com) has released Arnold 6 with Arnold GPU, which is designed to simplify how artists and studios create content, giving them speed and flexibility, as well as the ability to scale rendering capacity. Arnold’s intuitive interface makes it easy to toggle between CPU and GPU rendering, maintaining the same settings with a single click. Arnold GPU is based on Nvidia’s OptiX framework and is optimized to take advantage of Nvidia RTX technology.

BUDAPEST, HUNGARY — Coinciding with Apple’s launch of their latest Mac Pro workstation, Colorfront (www.colorfront.com) has announced a new, annual rental model for its Colorfront Express Dailies, which dramatically reduces the cost of operating the software. Launching in Q1, Colorfront’s subscription service will enable users to rent Express Dailies 2020 for an annual fee of $5,000, including maintenance support, updates and upgrades.

LOS ANGELES — The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (oscars.org) has announced that 20 films are in the running in the Visual Effects category for the 92nd Academy Awards. The Academy’s Visual Effects Branch Executive Committee determined the preliminary list of films eligible for further awards consideration. Later this month, the committee will select a shortlist of 10 films that will advance to nominations voting.

HOLLYWOOD — Veteran colorist Kevin Michael Kirwan has joined Periscope Post & Audio (periscopepa.com). Kirwan brings more than 20 years of experience as a senior colorist and credits on more than 40 television series, including American Crime Story and American Horror Story. At Periscope, he will perform final color out of an all-new grading suite at the Hollywood studio, which launched earlier this year.

LOS ANGELES — Zoe Schack has been promoted to editor at Final Cut (www.finalcut-edit.com), which has offices in London, New York and Los Angeles, where she is based. Shortly after moving to Los Angeles, Schack began working at Final Cut as an assistant editor. She held this position for three years before being promoted to editor.
