To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Change Sequence Timecode in Media Composer 5

February 5, 2011, 11:43 AM

http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/ssimmons/st...

Prior to Avid Media Composer 5.0 if you wanted to change the sequence timecode of an edit you hit the key stroke command + I while in the Record window and up popped a dialog box where that could be changed. Now in 5.0 command + I opens an info window with sequence details. But the ability to change Sequence timecode is still there.

Horses for courses

Frequent forum discussions among editors involve those arguing the relative merits of one favorite editing tool versus another. The reality is that no one tool is ideal for every task. It’s all about picking the right tool for the job – or as the British call it – "horses for courses". Whether you cut news, films, shows or spots - handle your own finishing or farm it out – or just want to deal with the least technical tool available – you’ll want to pick the right editing application...

The American Cinema Editors are asking competitions and film festivals to consider adding a motion picture editing category. While the role of the editor is a key element in film production production, the best editing is often relatively invisible. Designed to keep the audience in the story, the craft is often referred to as the "Invisible Art."

Save a comment specific column layout in FCP

February 4, 2011, 01:48 PM

http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/ssimmons/st...

When you’re using the View as List setting in a Final Cut Pro bin there are several columns that are labeled as comment columns of some type. All of those comment column headings can be edited and customized (as was discussed during the last 28 Days of Quicktips). I also like to save a column-only template for editing and taking notes.
