Cutting 3D is a boon to editors because they get to participate more in the creating of the whole picture - its look, characters, their lines and the story - over a longer period, beginning with storyboarding in pre-production.

A recent email blast for a new Sony camcorder loudly proclaims: "A new year. A new format." It sometimes feels that way, doesn't it? For prosumer video camera codecs, the current "belle of the ball" is AVCHD (Advanced Video Codec High Definition) in all its many flavors.

Like everyone else, I’ve viewed more 3D movies in the past few months than I’ve seen in years. Afterwards I’ve wondered two things: 1) Is 3D a money-making fad or here to stay? 2) How exactly is 3D edited?

OK, the Long Beach job is on hold for two weeks – planned hiatus while they do more shooting. One week for NAB, that I leave for on Sunday...and the other for a quick 6-10 day gig cutting a pilot for a TV show for a cable network.
