USB 3.0 vs. Thunderbolt

February 7, 2013, 07:28 AM

Thunderbolt or USB 3.0 - which standard is better? In video production I/O data transfers are an important issue and even though the difference is quite obvious (Thunderbolt is twice faster than USB 3.0, at least on paper), Robin Harris decided to write an informative review in which he compares the two standards.

Thunderbolt or USB 3.0--Which is the Better?

January 23, 2013, 08:13 PM

This year at CES, we heard quite a bit about products coming out using USB 3.0 and/or Thunderbolt. Hard drives, card readers, monitors, even laptop docking stations. Thunderbolt is becoming more and more common in PCs, while the USB Promoter Group plans to update USB 3 in order for it to reach 10Gb/s, virtually eliminating the speed gap. Many devices come in one flavor or the other, but for some, you have a choice.

LaCie d2 upgrade

December 4, 2012, 01:23 PM

We have Thunderbolt drives, and we have USB 3.0 drives. They've usually had to remain separate on full-size drives, however, which could make a refresh of LaCie's d2 something of a milestone -- it's purportedly the first desktop external drive with both Thunderbolt and USB 3.0 interfaces (as well as the matching cables) in the same box.

The 1TB USB 3.0 drive is highlighted by the same security, as we saw last year - a ten digital number pad on the front of the enclosure and 256-bit AES XTS hardware encryption running in the background.

G-DRIVE 2TB External Drive Review

November 2, 2012, 02:51 PM

The G-DRIVE is a 7200RPM hard drive packaged in an attractive aluminum case / heat sink with USB 3.0 and Firewire 400/800 connectivity. We love most everything about the design except the incredibly cheap power supply. The wall wart doesn't do this product justice.
