  • DAM in Broadcast and Post Production

DAM in Broadcast and Post Production

    November 29, 2012, 10:14 pm
One of the least considered functions at many studios is Digital Asset Management (DAM). More attention needs to be spent on this mostly under-used asset. Many files are created and then unceremoniously dumped into outer space, never to be seen again. However, it doesn't have to be that way; once created, digital assets become a goldmine that just keep giving.

ILM’s Rob Bredow to Talk ‘Solo: A Star Wars St

      October 17, 2018, 4:42 am
Even before he was promoted to SVP, executive director and head of ILM in May, Rob Bredow was a very busy man. He joined Industrial Light & Magic in 2014 as a visual effects supervisor, then quickly rose up the ranks, helping to launch ILMxLAB in 2015 to develop and release immersive entertainment, moving into the chief technology officer role at Lucasfilm in 2016 and most recently serving as visual effects supervisor and co-producer of Disney’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story,” working alongside director Ron Howard.

      ANIMATION

      Why Stop Motion is Underrated

      October 16, 2018, 6:32 am
These days, stop-motion films are few and far between, with Early Man and Isle of Dogs the only examples released within the last two years. This isn’t surprising. Stop-motion animation is incredibly tedious and difficult to produce, taking hours upon hours to build the sets and move each character motion-by-motion. Hand-drawn and computer-generated animation are far more preferable forms that allow filmmakers to do absolutely anything with ease.

AJA Corvid Cards Drive Atlas-Fractal Media Servers

      October 16, 2018, 6:31 am
(Grass Valley, CA--October 16, 2018) Technical specialists at Russia’s Innovative Television Systems (INTV) develop and manufacture graphics workstations, architect workflows, integrate systems and provide production support for special events. Founded in November 2008, the St. Petersburg-based company recently rolled out a powerful new media server, dubbed Atlas-Fractal, which leverages AJA’s Corvid 88 multi-stream, multi-format PCIe I/O card to play back video content on a videocube, giant LED screens and LED video perimeters in several major Russian sports stadiums and arenas.

      The Makeups of "First Man"

      October 16, 2018, 6:31 am
The Cinefex story on First Man – Universal Pictures’ dramatization of the life of astronaut Neil Armstrong – unearthed fascinating details about the production, which resulted in a 9,000-word story featured in our October issue. Director Damien Chazelle’s film told the story of the first man on the moon in a documentary style that required naturalistic approaches to all aspects of production – from production design, to cinematography, costume design, special effects, visual effects and makeup.
