In early August, the American Cinema Editors (ACE) held its second annual EditFest Los Angeles at the Universal Studiuos lot in Universal City. From documentary to comedy and from to television to narrative features, this was a rare opportunity for people to hear editors discuss the art, craft, and process of editing. Following are some of the highlights of several of the panel discussions:

Due to my work schedule, I did not attend the NAB convention in Las Vegas this year. Which, as it turns out, is a pity, because it was probably one of the most interesting gatherings in quite some time. Lots of interesting announcements on various fronts, involving some of the more significant players in our business, including Arri (with the Alexa camera line),

I’ve been a bit busy lately, both personally and professionally, which has resulted in a bit of time between posts. Personally, I moved (from Woodland Hills, in the San Fernando Valley, to Playa Vista, near Marina Del Rey) about 3 weeks ago. This represents a kind of homecoming for me, only a year after coming home from a few years in Florida, as I lived in the Marina on and off for almost 10 years.

Andrew Weisblum was the perfect choice when director Darren Aronofsky needed a "hungry editor" for his reality-based film The Wrestler. After 13 years of assisting, primarily in New York, Weisblum had only edited a handful of features (including The Darjeeling Unlimited and Broken English). The pair had met when Weisblum was visual effects editor on Aronofsky’s last film, The Fountain.

Thanks to his role in Darren Aronofsky’s The Wrestler, Mickey Rourke’s trophy room will soon need a renovation. The awards that he’s been nominated for, or already won, are piling up, but the man who deserves maybe the most thanks is a name very few are familiar with: Andrew Weisblum.

I had occasion to become familiar with Lightroom recently. A friend loaned me a Canon 5D and I wanted to look at the raw files I was making. Adobe is running a public beta for Lightroom 3 and I downloaded it. What a slick piece of work. The first time you use it, overlays appear above the interface explaining how it’s organized and giving you enough information to get started.
