It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The key to working quickly in Pro Tools, or any DAW, is using various shortcuts and quick keys. There are many workflow enhancers often underutilized by producers because there are so many to remember. Plus, you may not use them all of the time, and thus, they slip the mind. The list below features some of the simple, but valuable Pro Tools features I use while composing and editing.

KIP THORNE LOOKS into the black hole he helped create and thinks, “Why, of course. That's what it would do.” ¶ This particular black hole is a simulation of unprecedented accuracy. It appears to spin at nearly the speed of light, dragging bits of the universe along with it. (That's gravity for you; relativity is superweird.) In theory it was once a star, but instead of fading or exploding, it collapsed like a failed soufflé into a tiny point of inescapable singularity. A glowing ring orbit...

Like a lot of people I know in the Digital Asset Management trade currently, my firm has been deluged with client work for a sustained period. Several times in recent weeks, I’ve been asked why I think that is. Some vendors advance the theory that it’s because their solutions have become more sophisticated and demand has increased as a result. A few consultants take the view that their educational efforts are bearing fruit (and not before time some of the older hands are keen to point out).

Special effects makeup artists have historically been the driving force behind what makes a movie "magical." But, since the dawn of the digital age, makeup artists have had to adapt their style and technique to rediscover where they fit in the movie-making business.

When ParaNorman opens on August 17, it will be the second feature from Portland stop-motion animation house Laika, which birthed Coraline, and only the third stop-motion animation feature to be made in stereoscopic 3D (Coraline and Aardman Animations' The Pirates! were the first and second, respectively). At Laika, 550 2D, CG and stop-motion artists painstakingly handcrafted and shot every frame of ParaNorman over a two-and-a-half year period.

Editors rejoice. Every year the Creative Arts Awards given out by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences heralds the greatest achievement in our craft. When the 2014 ceremony awarded the Emmy for “Outstanding Single-Camera Picture Editing For A Miniseries Or A Movie,” it was not only a great triumph for winner Yan Miles; it was also the fulfillment of a promise for me.

Logic Pro's take folders are great for editing recorded parts of your songs But they can do so much more, especially when it comes to creatively mashing up beats and loops. Bill Burgess shows how.
