Article Humour Video Blog Audio Industry News Site News Tutorial Press Release Events

To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

What does a DIT do?

People's concept of what a DIT actually does ranges greatly depending on their experience. A DIT, or Digital Imaging Technician, is technically a Union job title in the IATSE Local 600 (Cinematographers Guild)...though many folks out there call themselves DIT regardless.

The visitor numbers might be down at this huge broadcast show, but the organisers have been quick to react – and we still had a great show.

Post Haste, a free project organizational tool for PC and Mac OS X. It isn’t a new tool, but it is quite powerful and worth having a look at to simplify your project structure.

I haven’t done a gear review in a while, but after putting my new Lacie 4TB Mini RAID to the test this week I was inspired to share my results.

It was a pretty quiet year as far as new cameras go, but that meant that some other technologies took center stage at NAB 2019. Let’s take a closer look.

Thunderbolt storage - made bigger and faster

One of the eternal rules in production and post production is that media will always expand to fill the space you allocate it + a bit more. There is always too much, and individual operators and small to medium post houses have tended to struggle on with NAS devices as they don’t have the room nor the budget for rack system storage.

SHAZAM! Editor on Balancing Horror and Comedy

Just like director David F. Sandberg, editor Michel Aller came into Shazam! from the horror genre. But as odd a transition as that may seem, going from editing films like The Nun and Annabelle: Creation to editing this year’s most joyful superhero movie was pretty seamless for Aller.

Resolve 16: Hands on with the new Cut Page

A year or so back I took the plunge and invested in DaVinci Resolve Studio 15. Previously I had used FCP X with a smidgen of Adobe Premiere thrown in for compatibility with one of my clients. But I had usually used Resolve for correction and grading - well as far as what this non full time 'colourist' can class as grading at any rate. So it made sense with Resolve's ever increasing NLE abilities to gradually move over. Particularly as I was using it increasingly more.

A radio edit is when you edit a project (short film, feature film, music video – anything) and lay out all the audio first.

Blackmagic Editor Keyboard: A return to the linear

With software suites continually offering an expanded toolsets and features, it can be easy to overlook the foundations of what makes a good edit. A good edit tells a story, a good edit has rhythm, and a good edit is invisible. No amount of visual trickery will disguise a bad cut and advances in hover-scrub technology will not correct poor rhythm and visual discontinuity.
