It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

In 1977, Star Wars succeeded against the odds. Three years later, its first sequel dealt with larger stakes and fiercer battles, the production essentially mirroring the scope of the film’s plot. However, this mighty struggle resulted in a larger canvas and a deeper appreciation of what drove the narrative of a galaxy far, far away. And musically, it was off the charts.

Audio editing can sometimes feel like a forgotten aspect of filmmaking and production. Yet, as a twenty-year veteran camera operator, I learned the visuals I shoot are only as good as the sound design and sound effects accompanying it.

Here at befores & afters, you might mostly read about the visual effects in large blockbuster films and television shows. However there are, of course, a plethora of independent projects featuring intricate – but often invisible – VFX work.

Scott at Consordini Musical Instruments gives a thorough review of iZotope RX. He uses it as a mix engineer. It’s great to get rid of room tone, or if you’re recording on site or without a recording studio. He also uses it for video work, which I know is what many of you do for a living. He gives an incredibly deep review that covers the features in RX 7.

If you are focused on Media Composer, Premiere Pro, or Final Cut Pro X, then it’s easy to forget that there are a number of other capable NLEs in the wild – especially for the Windows/PC platform. One of those is VEGAS Pro, which was originally developed by Sonic Foundry and came to market in 1999. At first VEGAS was a DAW, but video was quickly added, thus turning it into a competitive NLE. Over the years, the software development team moved to Sony (Sony Creative Software) and then to its ...
