It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The Matrix has one of the most complicated plots of the 20th and 21st centuries. It's a science fiction and action genre movie that asks a ton of questions that cut to the core of our existence. Even crazier?

The sound on your productions is one simple thing that can easily make a project seem really polished and expensive, or cheap and poorly produced. Even if you're not an audio expert, there are some basic tools available in Adobe Premiere Pro that can help you perfect your sound in post.

Thirty years ago, futurists dreamed of a world of jetpacks and robot cleaners. Maybe technology has given us voice-controlled light bulbs and smart speakers instead, but it's fun to look back and see the future through the eyes of the past.

And maybe Premiere Pro has made you feel like a chump more times than you can count due to slow renders and stuttering playbacks...having you sit there twiddling your thumbs like a giant idiot..."Hey V, wanna come have fun out at the lake?" "No, I have to watch my video very slowly render." "V, come to your nephew's birthday party." "Wish I could, but I'm editing at a slug's pace." "V, you're not yourself anymore and we're all worried about you." "Premiere Pro has me now. Premiere Pro is the one...

You probably have a sense that there are a lot of royalty-free sound effects and clips out there if you just knew where to find them. After all, there are so many generic sounds that can bring a movie to life that there’s no reason you should have to pay a fortune to make your movie sound great.

Sad music is one of the most dependable tools available to film and video creators. Songs rich with mournful minor keys and deliberate downtempo stillness (like those found in the curated playlist at the bottom of this post) convey raw emotions and bleak existential experiences in ways that language images alone can’t.

Creating professional-looking titles in After Effects is a lot easier than most people think. The key is knowing a few basic compositing principles — often used on blockbuster movies — then applying those to your own titles. And we don’t even need any expensive, third-party plugins to do this. Using a combination of these compositing techniques in subtle ways can give our titles a professional edge.

The merits of film school is an ongoing debate in the film and video community. And while a college education is never anything to scoff at, it’s also very true that one can get just as much, if not more, knowledge through online websites, resources, and YouTube channels.

Earlier this year, I attended London’s VidCon with Blackmagic to demonstrate Resolve to the passing youngsters — or as many companies view them, the customers of tomorrow. Both Adobe and Blackmagic had a presence at the convention to promote their software to the up-and-coming content creators. While many young creators care little about 12-bit footage and RAW, they do long for quirky text functions. As I hear every weekend from my ten-year-old nephew, “Uncle Lewis, can you make me an intr...
