To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The Art of Voiceover in the Films of Terrence Mali

October 15, 2014, 08:13 AM

As the year draws closer to its end, it’s becoming clear we can’t trust certain Italian distributors, but hopefully by 2015 we’ll see at least one of Terrence Malick‘s upcoming films. In the meantime, however, it’s time to take a look at one of the defining aspects of his filmography: the use of voiceover. Last year, The Dissolve‘s Scott Tobias and Kevin B. Lee teamed for a video essay on the subject and it’s now making the rounds as of late.

What Makes Editing VO Different From Editing Dialo

October 14, 2014, 12:01 PM

http://michaelcardillo.com/soundmind/editing-vo-vs...

A good dialog edit is a work of art.  You balance room tones (or world tones); you time every edit seamlessly around breaths and natural speech patterns; you do everything within your power to make the listener believe that it was all spoken at one time, by one person, in one place.  There are no […]

How to capture audio with a new Mac Pro

October 14, 2014, 12:00 PM

http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/mac/how-to-capture-...

I recently purchased a Mac Pro to replace the old cheese-grater Mac Pro I've had since 2009. When moving cables from my old Mac to the new one I was stumped when it came to plugging in a Toslink audio cable that I'd used in the past to capture high resolution audio from a device in my office. In fact, I don't see any audio input jack at all, much less a Toslink connection. How am I supposed to do this now?

Is the Mastering Engineer Still Necessary?

October 9, 2014, 12:43 PM

Years ago, the term “Mastering Engineer” was a very literal one. The “M.E.” was simply the person responsible for creating the master copies of a recording, from which all commercial duplicates could be made.

13 great scores from rockers turned film composers

With "Gone Girl" in theaters, your ears are being treated to yet another untraditional feat of film music composition from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It's their third collaboration with director David Fincher, and maybe their most intriguing. We talked to Reznor recently and hope to go even deeper on the work later in the season, but for now, let's consider the tradition his and Ross' contribution joins.
