To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

By Randi Altman MastersFX has long had a reputation in the industry as a place to go for practical character/creature makeup effects. Recently this 30-year-old shop opened its Digital Makeup FX division, finalizing a path the company set out on almost eight years ago. According to founder/owner/chief monster maker Todd Masters, “While we’ve just recently […]The post MastersFX: blending practical and digital makeup appeared first on postPerspective - Randi Altman's postPerspective.

Even though they have plenty of work after a high-profile release in Noah, visual effects company LookFX is calling it quits. This make it the latest in an unending series of visual effects companies falling victim to the ongoing crisis that Hollywood and California politicians in Sacramento seem ill-equipped and unwilling to confront. But in the case of the FX’s staff, there is a silver lining to this dark cloud, as commercial fx company Mass Market is expanding and is going to take over thei...

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Concept Art is Nightm

Personally, I had no problem with the design of the Turtles in Jonathan Liebesman’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I enjoyed the detail and think the darker, more realistic look is what helped make them feel natural (or at least as natural as possible) in the New York City environment. The preliminary Turtle design that just surfaced, however?

Strong characters, immersive environments and a ripping 80s soundtrack – that’s Marvel’s latest film Guardians of the Galaxy in a nutshell. With two main characters that would be realized entirely in CG, and with vast space and earth-like environments to create, the visual effects crew were once again crucial to completing the film.

For over 25 years, John Bruno has created some of the most memorable visual effects in film, and he’s got an Oscar (and a pile of nominations) to prove it. His credits include classics like Heavy Metal, Batman Returns, and Ghostbusters. And his collaborations with longtime friend James Cameron gave us The Abyss, Terminator 2, True Lies, Titanic, and Avatar. For all of these, Bruno has dictated the style and substance of the surreal and supernatural on our screens.

Approaches like this are really useful as they allow you to create footage and a quirky paper folding animation from very few source files. All I’ve used here are five images of these models – and one audio track. Here's a three-part tutorial series that I've created at the Digital Arts website. Click on the links below to go to the Digital Arts website. Following these links is the movie showing the effect that you will create. The post Paper Folding Animation appeared first on Angie...

Cinematic special effects have come a long way since Jason and the Argonauts. What once required dedicated and labor-intensive filming sessions can now easily be generated in near-lifelike quality by modern CGI. But Luma Pictures, an animation studio responsible for some of the biggest blockbuster movie effects of the last decade, has come full circle and incorporated 3D printed analog modeling into its design process.
