To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Metrics and the Future of Television

I kind of think of Phil Hodgetts as the "Maestro of Metadata" – that practice of attaching as much data directly to our media as possible so we can more easily use and find those images, audio files, and video later. Metadata has been getting a lot of play in the last year or two...

“Success isn’t fame, Success is just working and being good at what you do.” Jonah Ray, Comedian, The Nerdist Podcast. How do we define success for ourselves as editors?

What colour is night?

This is the sort of question that vexes film and TV people because we're torn between two things: the need to follow conventions, so that the audience can follow what's going on, and the desire to be original. Or, to put it another way, we're a bunch of insecure fashion victims who lack the courage of our own convictions.

Tony Scott 12-19-2012

Editing is a subjective art. One person's brilliance is another's contrivance. There are many ways to the same end, but the end is telling a story. Telling it clearly, concisely, smartly. Tony Scott directed some of the most interestingly told stories I've seen. Top Gun was an action movie that never confused who was where...

n. hai'eitas (Greek) An unexpected gap. Eye Movement - They'll remember your story better,

January 14, 2013, 08:57 PM

http://blogs.nppa.org/editfoundry/2013/01/14/eye-m...

There is research that shows horizontal eye movements are thought to cause the two hemispheres of your brain to interact with each other.  A lot of this research is about eye movement and memory recall.  If you can get your audience’s eye moving horizontally more than they would normally and there is even the slightest [...]

All New Look

I recently changed the look of this site to a completely new look. This fresh new look is cleaner and easier to navigate. The best part of it all is that it loads very nicely on mobile and tablet devices with out the need for a plug-in.  I had wanted to refresh the look of...

Time Management Tips to Start the New Year

When I finished college and started working full-time, I was struck by the amount of free time I suddenly had on my hands. My last semester of school, I didn't have a single day off from work or class (and often class days were much longer than work) until my last final exam was completed. To go from that kind of schedule to a measly 40 hours a week was a stark difference.

Are You Qualified for Color Correction?

January 11, 2013, 03:31 PM

http://masteringfilm.com/are-you-qualified-the-big...

For me, the biggest issue of secondary color correction is qualification. I’m not talking about whether the colorist is skilled enough to do it. I’m talking about what portion of the image you are trying to qualify—in other words, “choose”—as the section in which you make alterations. “To qualify” or “qualification” means that an area of the picture is specifically isolated for a correction by any number of methods.

How To Get People To Work For Free On You Film

Even if I’ve probably shared those inspiring photos with “I’m an artist, but I have bills to pay” like everyone in this industry, truth is that, like everyone in this industry, I have worked for free, and will continue to do so on the right project. What makes it the right project? Here is a little checklist to run through before asking anyone to dedicate time for your project, on top of the job they have to keep working on to pay the bills you are not willing/able to help with.
