It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

HandBrake is a great app for ripping your DVD collection as well as converting other files on your hard drive to, say, iOS-friendly formats. And to make things easier for most users, the software offers a number of built-in presets, including a bunch for Apple devices.

With the introduction of FCP X, Apple introduced a trackless, rippling timeline, much greater format support, and many other features besides. One of those is a less obvious innovation — surround audio editing. If you have a surround system hooked up to your Mac — through optical connection or through a simple minijack into a surround decoder, yes, you can use it. Let’s find out how.

In light of all the NAB announcements regarding editing, I have to ask - "WHY is it going to take time for FCPX to mature?" Apple is the biggest richest company in the world. I have to figure they've been at this piece of software for 2-3 years. They had 10 years of making FCP 1-7, Motion, etc. They own the code base for shake. They have logic. They can hire anyone they need. Why is it in the same 2 years Avid and Premiere can reinvent themselves?

The annual Sony NAB press conference was held at Las Vegas' Hard Rock Hotel, with a setting that seemed to be a bit less grandiose than previous years. Perhaps this is fitting considering that Sony recently announced as many as 10,000 layoffs coming in the near future.

Autodesk has launched Smoke 2013 for the Mac, a new version of what it's now calling video editing software (it used to be a 'finishing system') that costs under a quarter of the previous version. Smoke 2013 features a redesigned interface that brings together the standard track-based timeline of video editing software with the nodal compositing system used by effects tools from Autodesk's own Flame to Eyeon Fusion and The Foundry's Nuke.
