To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The American Cinema Editors have nominated the five films that have become the clear frontrunners in this year’s awards race for their annual ACE Eddie Awards. In the awards’ Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) category, which often lines up perfectly with Oscar’s choices, "Black Swan," "The Fighter," "Inception," "The King’s Speech" and "The Social Network" were the nominees, which are the same five nominees that the DGA honored last week.

My Relationship with After Effects

Hmmm... maybe a common new year's resolution for fellow creative ppl. is blogging! Nice to see so many entries lately... I'm still quite busy at the ranch. Among many other things, just did a major (to me) "fix it in post" exercise. I had some footage of a realtor on camera who looked at everything but the camera. I won't go into why the footage is this way (it's an ugly story), but it was in my and our department's best interest to try and make at least a few seconds of it usable.

Screen Time is Bad for Your Health

In a new large-scale study examining the relationship between screen time and heart problems, scientists found something dramatic. Just sitting in front of a screen for four or more hours a day correlates with a doubling of heart disease risk compared to less than two hours. And it was associated with a 50% higher death rate, as well.

It’s funny when I talk to fellow producers and directors in my studio, with large monitors with Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 up on the screens, and I ask them how they like iMovie. Sometimes they chuckle, sometimes they have a blank stare, but almost always they have a look of surprise. Well, the joke is usually on them, as iMovie ’11 is one of the most powerful and useful editors on the Mac platform.

Computer Editing: Making the Most of Bad Footage

January 14, 2011, 10:02 AM

http://jeffvlog.wordpress.com/2011/01/14/computer-...

If you’re like most video editors, you’ll have occasion to edit footage that someone else shot. For many editors, this can be a harrowing experience. After all, your reputation as an editor is on the line. You have no control over the quality of the footage you receive, but you’re committed to putting your name on a first-rate finished product. You may get lucky. Maybe you’ll receive footage that looks and sounds pristine. But, come on; let’s be realistic. When you agree to put togethe...

When editors or motion graphic designers are designing elements for lower thirds, show openings or background beds, they always need elements that they can use to not only spice up their current project, but also have a complete package to build elements from scratch. The Motion Designer’s Toolkit from Digital Juice is just that product.
