It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

We got some terrible news here at Avid this morning: award-winning ACE Editor Sally Menke has passed away. Sally was best known for her longtime collaboration with Director Quentin Tarantino. Her work on films like "Pulp Fiction" "Reservoir Dogs" and "Kill Bill, Volume 1 and 2" garnered her several prestigious awards and nominations including: wins in 2004 for "Editor of the Year" by The Hollywood Film Festival and "Best Editing" by the Las Vegas Film Critics Society...

Yesterday, the editing legend was hiking with her dog, and when she never returned, police were alerted and after an extensive search, her body was found in a ravine. She was 56. While people may remember Tarantino’s filmography for other reasons, Menke’s work as longtime collaborator and editor will always be an integral part as to what made Tarantino’s first seven feature films the masterful collection of films that they truly are. She won acclaim for her Oscar-nominated...

Much of the buzz surrounding David Fincher's new film, The Social Network, is about the timely subject matter, since it concerns people and events behind creation of the famous Facebook social networking site. The film screened opening night of the New York Film Festival, September 24, and opens nationally October 1, through Columbia Pictures.

Fortunately for Walter, he discovered at an early age that he had a gift for sound recording, even though he didn't take his youthful experiments seriously until after he had explored other paths, including architecture and oceanography. Always eager to push things and see what happens, he found himself in good company at USC film school, where he met George Lucas, another graduate student whom instructors identified as a troublemaker for daring to challenge cinematic conventions...

On Sunday, September 12, the Editors Guild hosted a family picnic at Calamigos Ranch, next to the Los Angeles Equestrian Center in Burbank. Serena Kung, the Guild’s Director of Membership Services organized the event. All told, there were just under 500 guests taking in the All-You-Can-Eat Barbeque and the family-friendly games.

Despite my pension for bitching about our business, which I will admit I tend to do a bit too much, I feel so fortunate that I am able to make a living doing something I enjoy. I am 50 years old and my passion for filmmaking hasn't subsided and has actually increased since I started freelancing a few years ago.

Occasionally, in the 20+ years that I have been a editor a client has presented storyboards with a budget that was far too low to effectively execute within their budgetary limitations. I would wonder were is the person at the agency telling the client that "these lofty and ambitious goals can not be done within their budget and here is an idea that will work with the money you have".

This very well produced and very topical video is making the rounds today. I saw it via Twitterer beerad who is one of the co-creators. It certainly took someone some time and effort and as a post-production nerd who gets most of the references in the video I thank them for it! Motion graphics people will probably enjoy it most of all. NSFW.
