It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Straightforward storytelling is the last thing anyone expected from the Coen brothers, more famous for tight filmic twists and dark comic turns. But in their new feature film, True Grit, based on the classic novel of the same name by Charles Portis, the Coens deliver precisely that. The movie’s narrative line is as unwavering as its precocious hero, 14-year-old Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), whose determined pursuit of her father’s killer in the post-Civil War Indian territories drives and....

I wasn’t able to make it to the ACE Eddies this weekend, and the main reason I was bummed about that, if I’m honest, was a tribute to editing legend Michael Kahn. The tribute reel really hit the right spot and now it’s available to watch. Check it out below and relive the magic.

If you haven’t heard, the American Cinema Editors held their 2011 Eddie Awards last Saturday night, February 19. Along with the list of winners was the Lifetime Achievement Award handed out to Michael Kahn. Often you’ll heard him credited as Steven Speilberg’s longtime editor and while he has edited a lot of films for Spielberg he has also cut a lot of other legendary films as well. Just check out his IMDB profile.

I’m afraid you’ll find that I’m having trouble getting all that excited about this year’s race for Best Film Editing. How can I when the absolute best editing job of the year (from a true master, no less) was shunned altogether, while a cruel joke was played in the form of "Inception" editor Lee Smith getting the shaft, too.

Publisher Gremese Editore will bring out my second book, Film Editing: Great Cuts Every Filmmaker and Movie Lover Must Know in Italian in the next 6-12 months. It will beat the Mandarin Chinese edition by a few months. Editing pictures speaks a universal language and I am proud of all of us editors/editores for that.

After the initial "shock therapy", the rest of the evening was devoted to a milder approach, a "brainwashing", Manchurian Candidate style, of images and cuts that made sense and yet didn't have to spell out each emotion you were supposed to feel by spoonfeeding you each reaction shot!

It's hard to convey the sheer brilliance of the seminar a lucky few of us had the chance to attend last night. I've seen glimpses of this type of information, namely in two places, Peter D. Marshall's directing course and in an introductory speech by Professor Daniel Jacobo from Chaffey College on the Tao of Super 8.

This entry is about sequencing. You already know about sequencing? Bare with me. You might learn something even if you understand sequencing already.

The skeleton of every film is a screenplay, but few can boast as strong a bone structure as the one provided by screenwriter Aaron Sorkin for The Social Network, the fast-paced, fast-talking story of fast times behind the scenes of Facebook. Moving self-assuredly among a multiplicity of different settings — they include the Harvard campus where Mark Zuckerberg's ideas were born, the Henley Royal Regatta rowing event where Zuckerberg's classmates lose a race by a whisker, and the noisy...
