It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

One of the most vexing of FCP issues in recent months has been with FCP 7.0.2. It would have affected anyone who made subtitles in FCP and exported an XML for creating an STL for DVD Studio Pro, or like me, to do XML manipulation to do global changes in subtitles. What happened was that ALL the line breaks were lost. Really frustrating leading to a workaround consisting of reinstalling a 'ghost FCP 7' and running that for making XMLs.

OK, let’s face it. Post-production gear isn’t really as exciting as the toys involved in production. While all the stuff that we use during the post process is equally as important as the stuff used to acquire the image it just doesn’t have the same kind of sexiness. But there’s quite a lot of folks in post that are very excited about the release of DaVinci Resolve for Mac. In its own way, Resolve is kind of like our Arri Alexa.

I am in the process of working on a huge project, of which I am not at liberty to really speak of, concerning the war in Afghanistan. When I say huge I mean HUGE! There are almost 6TB of footage. That’s BIG. I am also working on this with editors Shane Ross and my mentor and business partner in L.A. Jim Edwards, but I digress. They say "war is hell" but it is also fucking cool. If it weren't than some of the best selling video games wouldn't be "Call of Duty" and "Medal of Honor".

This follows a number of audio mixing apps that show potential real time control of levels and effects in FCP and other audio software suites. I’m excited and intrigued by the prospect of being able to carry around 4 or 5 different virtual control surfaces in my backpack...

With all of the Media Composer 5 news, it might be easy to miss Avid’s latest update for the flagship system, Avid DS. Version 10.3.1 (see addendum below), released in mid-July, is a small point release that introduced two huge features – improved stereoscopic 3D control and support for RED Digital Cinema’s new "color science" and the Mysterium-X sensor. The new RED capabilities are showcased in the "All Yours" music video by the band Metric.
