To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The engineers over at Blackmagic Design continue their mad dash to update and upgrade DaVinci Resolve. The end of last week saw the release of Resolve 8.1. This comes after the huge 7 to 8 upgrade we saw earlier in the year but this incremental update to 8.1 adds some pretty significant features itself.

Streamlined Primary Color Correction with Premiere

Color correction falls into three categories: primary, secondary and 'looks." Primary color correction changes all pixels in a clip’s frame. Secondary corrections are limited to a region within the frame; be it an object, a person's face, or a tonal or color range like the sky. Looks are moods you try to set using color. For example: harsh and cold or soft and warm.

With the mid-September release of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive starring Ryan Gosling, Mat Newman’s sharp editing has been praised for contributing to audience involvement in the action and character dynamics. Newman recently spoke at length with the Editors Guild website, from his home in Berlin, about Drive and his career as an editor. He described his work with director Refn as particularly harmonious.

When and where to make the cut: inspired by Murch

We begin the semester by cutting a complex dialog sequence, using ScriptSync to help assemble the 40+ camera angles that make up the scene. Because the students have so much to do technically in constructing the scene, they sometimes fail to see the forest for the trees on the first pass. That is, because they have so much material to sort through—and so many decisions to consider—they often tend to get caught up in building the scene, and forget to sit back and really watch.

Last October, I had the rare opportunity to edit a feature film called Courageous, which is in theaters now. Courageous was the number one new movie the weekend it opened (September 30th) and the number four movie over all and it’s stayed in the top six for the last three weeks, with its per-theater box office at the number one spot for two weeks, and still at number 2.

WELCOME TO THE DRYER was the first video from the new album Tidal.I started that way for several reasons: very quickly placed the viewer in a brothel, and thereafter, set the tone that had interested me during this video: funny and fun. For me, it has been the host to mount this video because, with large amount of material, I have experienced and assembly techniques use many of the documentary genre.
