It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Check out this in-depth article by Oliver Peters available on DigitalContentProducer.com, which takes a closer look at Higher Ground and the film's RED/Avid Media Composer workflow. The film originally moved down a postproduction workflow path based on the fact it would be edited using Final Cut Pro until editor Colleen Sharp came on board and the team began working with Media Composer--three weeks after the start of production faced with two and a half weeks of dailies in ProRes.

Apple is still selling Final Cut Studio 3 which contains Final Cut Pro 7, Motion, Compressor, Soundtrack Pro, Color.DVD Studio Pro. For the price of about Rs 60,000 or maybe lower, this is still a good bargain.

The release of Final Cut Pro X has brought to light a certain distinction amongst picture editors. When Apple removed key features and changed the user interface, they received a wicked backlash. The biggest complaints weren't with the UI but lack of OMF, XML, and EDL support. Without these it's impossible to use FCPX in...

With the rapid success of the Arri Alexa, the continuing evolution of Red (specifically its deployment of the RedlogFilm gamma curve), and the use of log curves in things like the Sony F3 and Technicolor's Cinestyle curves for Canon DSLR’s, I thought it might be a good time to talk about exactly what log is and is not, specifically in the context of digital images.

Just as the computer manufacturers discuss the post-PC world, I believe the film and video industry has entered the post-FCP world. For over a decade Apple has steadily gained NLE market share and set the standard with its Studio software configuration. In addition to the popularity of Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro owned the DVD space for Mac-based authoring shops. The integration of Color launched new opportunities for entrepreneurial colorists.

An edit point has three sides--and we have a keyboard shortcut to select each of them. To quickly toggle between selecting one of the three sides of an edit (that is, the In, the Out, or both), select the edit point with the Arrow tool and press U on your keyboard... do it again... and again.
