It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.
Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.
We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.
Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.
Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.
I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!
Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

The times have changed, and action movies of today are filled with woozy CGI effects and PG-13 language. Where are the action movies we grew up with? After careful examination, below are the items that we miss from modern (crappy) action films.

In the next few lessons in our look at Apple Motion 5, we’re going to take a look at text creation, inside of your project. Creating text is much more than simply typing it on the screen. When we’re doing you’ll have a good understanding of the actual creation of text, adding shadows and even strokes to your footage to create a stylistic look that any producer would be happy with!

In this informative tutorial we set up a furry bat character in Maya by utilizing Ornatrix Surface Comb operator to define hair shape and Length operator to refine it. Learn how to use maps to control both length and distribution of the hairs and use this knowledge in the future to drive many other parameters in Ornatrix. See how our non-linear workflow can make your life simpler in every day character setup.

My wife sent me a link to this article by Ian Bogost, because she knows the “are programmers engineers?” thing is a pet peeve of mine. I liked the article, and I think Bogost presents a good rundown of the problems in software engineering, but ultimately, I can’t go along with his main thesis. While I agree that programmers aren’t (in general) engineers, it isn’t for the reasons he gives.

By Mel Lambert “In the very near future, immersive audio will be everywhere,” stated William Redmann, Technicolor’s director of standards for immersive media technologies. “It will enhance our dramas, seat us in sports venues and put us on the field [for outdoor events]. Now it’s just a matter of making it happen!” Technicolor’s technologist was chairing a fascinating session during the SMPTE Technical Conference & Exhibition, held at Loews Highland Hotel in the heart of Holl...
