To The Aotg.com Community,

It is with a heavy heart that we announce we will no longer be updating Aotg.com. Back in 2007, when we started, there was a lack of access to information about film, television, and commercial editing. We wanted to fix that by creating a central location for content about editing to be stored.

Since then, we've watched the amount of content about editing on the internet grow exponentially. We've also watched social media tools come and go with that growth. Does anyone remember Google Wave!? These social media tools changed how people access and search for media and information. People tend to turn to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, and Instagram for their news and information, and those are all great tools to promote your sites, but as a site that aggregates links to other sites for users, it just doesn't work for us.

We will keep the site live but archive the ability to add links and comments. We will keep our database live with the links for those who desire to use it to search for editing information and research.

Our podcast, The Cutting Room, will move over to the Filmmakeru.com website and will continue to be a place for interviews with editors and other film professionals.

Everyone who worked for Aotg.com loved what we created and are proud that we could help so many editors find content that spoke to them.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the various post events worldwide in the coming years!

Yours truly,
Gordon Burkell

Keeping Mobile Avid Media Updated

February 7, 2012, 08:22 AM

http://www.evanschiff.com/bd/articles/keeping-mobi...

On most of the films that I've worked on, I've needed to keep at least two Avid systems up to date. This could be because an editor wants to be able to cut from home, or the Director wants the ability to cut on set. To handle this I wrote a Terminal (bash) script that searches for any new MXF or OMF media on specified volumes since the last time the script was run.

Last year I was the lead colorist for director Yan Vizenberg's first feature, Cargo. The premiere was this last fall, and it was glowingly reviewed in both the New York Times and Hollywood Reporter, but I only recently noticed the new trailer.

Much has been written about the missing features in Final Cut Pro X when compared with FCP 7. One particular missing feature that has been causing workflow problems for some people is the inability to add chapter markers to an exported QuickTime movie for displaying on an iOS device or Apple TV.

Today a very practical blog post for everyone who still has to rely on Final Cut Pro 7 for a lot of their work (like me), despite trying to phase it out slowly (which isn't too easy when you don't have time to really learn another software – oh well!).

Digital Dailies The Race to Good Enough

February 6, 2012, 07:16 PM

http://www.cinemaeditormagazine.com/2012/01/digita...

I can't remember a time when our industry wasn't hell bent on faster, better, cheaper, but this is the first I can recall such a willful disregard of tried and tested gear, pipelines and people. Since the advent of high-end digital cameras, we've all been so wooed and mesmerized by the...

Multicam: the promised feature. Just as Apple said when FCP X was released, multicam was released in a free update in early 2012. Grab 10.0.3 now if you don't have it already. There are many other improved features besides this one, but it's the headliner for most of us. If you've got a camera, an iPhone, and an iPad 2 handy, that's three cameras ready to go.
